Story description

Twenty-six nine-year-olds, one classroom and a first year of teaching that no training prepared you for.

First Year is an interactive slice-of-life story about a newly qualified teacher's first year at a primary school, from the empty classroom in August to the end of summer term.

A year in a classroom

  • Make a room into a classroom and learn twenty-six names.
  • Have a lesson collapse, and one that sings, and feel the difference.
  • Get through parent evenings, the nativity play, sports day and a school visit nobody admits to worrying about.

Mrs. Fairweather mentors you sideways. Mr. Pillai, the caretaker, notices who is not eating lunch. Amara and Jonas are two children who have already become friends. Everyone else is different every time you play.

Warm, funny and tender

Chalk dust, felt-tips and the slow pride of watching someone learn. Difficulty is handled with care.

A paper crane is on the shelf and the whiteboard is blank. What do you write first?

M
Mrs. Imogen Fairweather

A
Amara Okafor and Jonas Weiss

Two children in Class 4B who have already become unlikely friends: a fierce reader and a gifted talker with a stammer who is quietly brave.
