Story description
A missing person. An official story full of holes. A client who has run out of safer people to ask.
The Last Case is an interactive detective noir mystery set in Harrow City, where the Hallow Street scandal left the police fractured and public trust in ruins. You are a private investigator working in the space between what the authorities cannot solve and what they would prefer to leave alone.
Follow the details that refuse to fit
- Question witnesses, compare accounts, and decide which inconsistencies deserve another visit.
- Trade favors with informants and work out how much a useful secret is really going to cost.
- Navigate the remaining police, private security interests, and organized crime without assuming any side is clean.
Careful observation and conversation move the investigation forward. Violence brings consequences; a well-chosen question can be more useful than a threat. The city remembers favors, and people who help with one lead may want something when you return.
Learn what people are choosing not to say
A witness can be honest about one detail and evasive about the next. A client may need your help while still keeping something back. In Harrow City, an account that sounds convincing is only a place to begin. Returning with a better question, comparing it against another lead, or noticing who benefits from the official explanation can change where the investigation goes.
Captain Odalys Ferro is an honest contact constrained by the department she still serves. Marcus Kline trades information for favors, making him useful in ways that rarely stay simple. Vantage Group has moved into the gap left by the scandal, while organized crime has its own reasons to watch what you uncover. Choosing how to work with these people helps define the investigator you become.
Decide what a solved case is worth
The missing person's trail develops through the leads you pursue and the pressure you apply. Finding an answer may create a harder decision about what to do with it. Protect a source, challenge someone powerful, honor a client's request, or keep following a thread they hoped you would leave alone: the consequences extend beyond closing a file. The city's atmosphere comes from that friction between finding the truth and living with it afterward.
The case can become personal
Rain-soaked streets, uneasy alliances, and morally complicated clients give this crime thriller its atmosphere. The missing person is the beginning of a trail, and following it may draw you into the city's unfinished business.
Your client is waiting across the desk. Which part of their story will you ask them to tell again?
Characters
One of the few genuinely honest officers left on the force. Sympathetic to the player, but constrained by what remains of departmental politics.
Runs a downtown information network - a fixer who trades secrets for favors. Never quite trustworthy, never quite an enemy.
The client who walked into the player's office asking about her missing brother. Grieving, scared, and increasingly certain something bigger is going on.
